Poem: Immanuel

Down in the valley of ash and bone
Zion’s hope was worn with chagrin,
Until, on those who sat in darkness, light shone;
Jesse’s stump had budded once again!

… He was a gifted rabbi for sure
And did such miracles none had ever seen,
Yet they could see neither king nor savior
In this most humble Nazarene.

Often in the company of peasants, fishermen
And worse – one of His disciples was a publican!
The poor flocked to Him, as did children
And all the kind who needed The Great Physician.

If God who was hid in awe, unapproachable,
Would decide amongst men to dwell,
Who would have thought He’d be so reachable -
Stooping as low as this Immanuel?

He reconciled God and man in His humanity;
He bids us to come without our fears
To fellowship with His divinity
Of which we are with Him now heirs.

O Immanuel! The Lord who came to serve!
God with us, warm as the sun;
O Immanuel! A friend to love and have,
His praise goes on and on…
